          HEIDELBERG WINTER
A beautiful city on the Neckar River, Heidelberg is rich with history, tradition and architecture.  The famous Heidelberg Castle blends a series of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles, along with graphic evidence of French attempts to destroy it in 1689 and 1693.

Below this vast edifice, the rustic Old Bridge with its Baroque-helmeted gate towers spans the Neckar, which flows through a landscape that changes dramatically with times and seasons.

In this watercolor, Marsha Cheney expresses the enchantment of winter which adds charm to the Heidelberg Castle and Old Bridge.

This card is part of the Christmas collection, printed in Heidelberg on fine embossed paper, with greetings in English and German.

      HEIBELBERG ILLUMINATED

In this watercolor, Marsha Cheney portrays the illumination of the Heidelberg Castle and Old Bridge which adds nightly majesty to the old city on the Neckar River.

          BLACK FOREST WINTER
The "Schwarzwald," so named after its dark, giant fur trees, is a richly wooded, mountain region in southwestern Germany, in the state of Baden-Wurttemberg.

Once considered mysterious, the Black Forest is now a favorite spot for outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, horseback riding, camping, and cross-country skiing.  Its villages are renowned for the production of cuckoo clocks, carvings, and toys.

Marsha's watercolor painting captures the atmosphere of sun breaking through the great fur trees of a Black Forest winter snow storm.

          SILENT NIGHT CAROLERS

The hymn, "Silent Night," was composed in the Tyrolean Alps of Austria on Christmas Eve in 1818.  Joseph Mohr, assistant pastor in Oberndorf, wrote the text as he was inspired by a picture in his church study of shepherds watching their flocks by night. (Luke 2:8)

Some say Mohr was writing a new hymn which could be accompanied by a guitar because mice had damaged the church organ, rendering it unusable for the coming Christmas Mass.

In this watercolor, Marsha Cheney depicts carolers singing this inspiring hymn as little mice curiously watch.

The current church resembles the historic chapel, which was destoyed by a flood.

          ST NICHOLAS DAY, GERMANY

                                     GREETINGS INSIDE EACH CARD:

                     Season's Greetings
and Best Wishes for the New Year

                       Frohe Festtage
                 und die besten Wunsche
                    fur das Neue Jahr

Preserving an ancient legend, German families celebrate the eve of St. Nicholas Day on the 5th of December.

On this magical night, "St. Nikolaus" and his companion, Schwartz Peter or Knecht Ruprecht, traditionally leave candy and small homemade gifts, or a switch and coal, in the shoes of children--depending on their behavior.

In this watercolor by Marsha Cheney, St. Nikolaus and Schwartz Peter lead children to the village church along streets decorated with evergreen garlands and trees adorned with white lights.
